CHAPTER 16

Jebulan System - Unknown Island on Tangee

Nov 25th 2247

The emergency shuttle flared its thrusters, setting us down near a towering tree line. The greens and browns fought the sporadic sunlight, and yet again I was amazed by Tangee’s uniqueness.

After a slight jostle, the thrusters quieted, and a silence hung over the interior.

When the back door hissed open, the kids raced out and into the tall grass. I exited last besides Bethany who stayed buckled in her seat.

“Not coming?” I asked.

“Heavens, no. We’re not on the same side. I will get rescued, deliver vital details, be the hero for fifteen minutes, and collect a nice bonus. Eventually though, I’ll have that alien,” she said with determination.

“This.” I shook my head. “This life form has a name. A soul. You’d never understand that,” I said with a scoff.

She snickered, cackling out a laugh at the very notion. “Irrelevant. I want the science that the creature contains. You realize we cannot bend rock, manipulate solar radiation, or create floating planet replicas. I know you’re not some dumb hunk. That alien is dangerous, and until the proper authorities control it, you’ll never be safe.”

“If you were actually important, I’d shoot you,” I said with a sneer.

“I believe you,” she said in a haughty tone.

She knew I wouldn’t kill her in cold blood, and I knew it too.

Instead of giving her more information, I left the woman alive, knowing she was just a cog in the machine. Killing her would be pointless.

Tall blue grass swayed up to my hips when I walked to the others. Georgina carried her sister on her back, Mercie answered the boy’s endless questions, and I set the bag with our supplies down to perform a quick inspection.

“Which way?” Mrs. Tebi asked.

The tree line called to me, I wasn’t sure why, but I knew that was the direction we needed to go. I handed the woman a las pistol before leading the group into the gloomy forest.

The canopy resembled the massive trees by the volcano. Meaning, yeah, monsters likely lurked up high and burrowed down low.

“Did you kill her?” the boy asked.

“What’s your name?” I asked, answering his question with one of my own, a game Gramps used to play with me when I was his age.

“Felix,” he replied, and I nodded.

I shrugged. “I’m afraid my life is about to take a turn for the worst and you all should get far away from me. However, no, I did not shoot that woman. It goes against the code. If I had proof of her committing atrocities, then maybe I would have shot her. Generally speaking, we bring in the accused, not judge them.”

Mercie hustled to be at my side. Her fingers entwined with mine, and I glanced down at her in concern.

“You… you have had a lot of people abandon you,” Mercie said, her voice firming with determination. “I don’t know how your life got tougher, or what’s going on yet, but I’m here to help.”

I nodded, and once we were a few hundred feet into the forest said, “Mercie.
